Yinka is based
on a pattern in Quilts on Safari, a book by the well-known South
African quilters Jenny Williamson and Pat Parker. We are very grateful
to Jenny and Pat who readily gave their blessing to De’s adaptation
of their doll, delighted that it should be used in this way.
De has named her doll after Yinka Hill, a delightful girl whom two
of us here used to teach in Midsomer Norton. Yinka was born to Nigerian
parents and later adopted by Ken and Denise Hill, whom she adored.
Yinka was a joy: a happy, widely popular and bubbly girl who loved
life but, suddenly and unexpectedly, she died whilst on an activity
holiday in Australia. She was due to go hang-gliding the following
day.
In Yinka’s memory, Mr and Mrs Hill set up a fund to help children
with cancer, and through them, we are pleased to make a donation
to CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Children) for every pattern that
we sell.
