Midsomer Quilting Classes 2011
We are really proud of our regular team of excellent teachers who are joined from time to time by teachers from America, Australia and South America. (And Quilters have several times flown from Italy and Spain to attend them).

We run courses almost every Saturday and Sunday, with occasional additional ones midweek.

We are also delighted to host City and Guild classes led by Lynne Quinn, whose web site will reveal the extent and success of her C&G courses.

Our programme will be updated on this site with hard copy programmes issued twice a year to those without email access.

The minimum suggested level of skill for each class is indicated beneath the name of the teacher.

To reserve a place on a class you should contact us as early as possible with a non-returnable deposit of £10-00 per class . In the event of our having to cancel the class the deposit would of course be refunded.

What a great team! I really like teaching here. From the minute you walk into this great quilt shop you are made welcome by De, Chris and Birgitta. From the aroma of brewing coffee to the fantastic ever changing fabrics on the overflowing shelves - and the witty repartee - this is an experience not to be missed. What is there not to like?!

SPRING IN PARIS

Catherine has developed a whole range of new designs using Jelly Rolls.  The advantage of the jelly roll is that there is very little waste. Apart from the hexagon quilt already used in previous classes, there is French Braid, strippy triangles, snail trail, bento box and several others still in development.

JOLLY JELLY ROLL II

This is one of the favourite appliqué blocks of traditional nineteenth century American quilts. Learn the tricks of fine handwork whilst exploring the various interpretations of this beautiful design. Choice of fabrics and use of colour will also be covered in this hand appliqué class, which is suitable for all levels.

WHIG ROSE

Another class repeated by demand! Jenny writes: The French braiding technique is easy: straight piecing, combining strippy log cabin with cornerstones. The variety of colourways is restricted only by your own preference. You can use a tone of a colour, watercolour effect, a variety of brights etc, along with a contrast for the cornerstones. In this session you will start to make the French braid strips and I’ll talk about how to put the quilt together to achieve various effects.

FRENCH BRAID

Through an oversight we were somewhat overbooked the last time Jennie visited us, but were told: None of us were a bit bothered – it was just a privilege to be in the class. So there! Jennie says of class: Nine unique and innovative designs all created by manipulating squares in ingenious forms. Use these designs for quilt blocks, garments, home décor or where ever you wish. (All designs are 5” square.)

SUDOKU SQUARED

From Chris's first book, Quilt Designs from Decorative Floor Tiles (now titled 'Quilts Beneath your Feet') this beautiful star quilt is made from a colour palette of dark, mediums and lights in just two colours. Whilst it looks complex it really is easy to achieve and we should have a great time choosing the colours. and creating your own special star.

CLIFTON STAR

These books are really appealing to small children who love the different textured animals. They’re made using the reverse-machine appliqué technique so you can include unusual fabrics like furs, satin and suede! Two (or more) animals will be completed on the day and patterns will be provided for you to complete the rest at home. You can bring your own animal fabrics to use or dip into Lynne’s collection on the day.

ANIMAL FEELY BOOK

This is a workshop for Foundation Piecing, using my special technique for Fool-proof Frustration Free Foundation Piecing. No waste: the pieces fit every time, suitable for beginners as well as people who have tried foundation piecing and 'don't get on with it'. This project can form the centrepiece of a much larger quilt, and you will be shown how to achieve that.

STAINED GLASS

Tutor: We’ve probably offered this course twice as much as any other and each time it’s been a success. Most of those who have done it seem (after just six hours) able to cope with almost any other course that we offer. Someone contacted us recently to say how very beneficial the workshop had been for her: Pat gave me a huge amount of confidence. But if you don’t listen when she is talking to you then woe betide you!

PATCHWORK AND QUILTING FOR BEGINNERS

Jenny says: This is a very basic course for people who want to learn machine piecing. I’ll show how to use rulers and rotary cutters to achieve accurate 3.5” squares. Then we’ll look at different needles and threads as well as methods used to achieve a 1/4” seam, You’ll also sew some nine patch blocks with matching seams. Then I’ll show you basic methods of how to make a small quilt and how you can achieve different designs from a basic block.

MACHINE PIECING FOR BEGINNERS

Catherine's quilt ‘Kimono Circles’ was juried in to the World Quilt and Textile Show in the USA in 2010 and a version of her wall-hanging will be taught in the class.  You will learn how to make the blocks with circles in assorted sizes, quilt them and assemble the whole.

JAPANESE CIRCLES

This is a hugely impressive class. Helen Conway says: I learnt more in the first half an hour than in the past 15 months - the information Dawn gave us on needles and threads and tension issues alone was worth the price. I have pages of notes! I would highly recommend Dawn as a teacher. The class was so informative that after we first staged it we asked Dawn to return the following week to give De and Birgitta a private lesson.

THREADPLAY

This is a centuries-old technique, also known as Chenille. In fact, slashing through fabric layers to reveal the colour below can be traced back to the Renaissance. According to one story, it started with ragged Swiss soldiers' attempts to keep warm by stuffing colourful cloth into their war-torn garments. De, being half Swiss, will like that! The cushion illustrated was made by Helen, who is one of Lynne's City & Guilds students.

CHENNILE

We’re delighted that Katharine is able to return to teach this class. Using the technique of foundation piecing makes the construction of the blocks easier and ensures accuracy because they are only 4” square.

SNAIL TRAIL

Lone Star or ‘Star of Bethlehem’ is a very traditional design.  It is made up of diamonds that used to be mounted on paper templates and stitched together by hand.  Catherine will show you a method that is machine-pieced, quick, easy and accurate.  Once you have learnt the technique you can adapt it for a whole quilt, a larger star, or a series of stars for whatever purpose you choose.

INFINITY SQUARES

Lynne’s bag has attracted a huge amount of admiration - everyone wants one - and now she’s modified it so it can be made as a quilter’s tool bag, a make-up bag or a gent’s bag! It has see-through, ‘velcroed’ pockets so if some items are not wanted on voyage they can be detached and you just keep the ones you need.  NB: There will be some preparation to do before the class - but details will be sent well in advance.

UNFOLDING WORKSHOP BAG

Play with shape, form and pattern and construct two or three innovative 12” square textured designs. Be amazed at the ease with which intriguing manipulated effects can be produced by just folding, rolling, tweaking and twitching squares and rectangles. Combine a selection of the blocks for an innovative quilt or utilise individually in cushions/bags and all!

TEXTURED TWIDDLING FOR CLEVERLY CREATIVE QUILT BLOCKS

Create a patchwork style tile pattern like those found on floors and in palaces for centuries. Instead of intricate piecing, we make it easy by placing separate tile shapes onto a background with narrow spacing between each piece. The pieces are fused on and then outlined by hand with blanket-stitch in matching thread to give a soft organic look, just like the real tiles set in stone. Soft colours are not essential - batiks and similar organic fabrics work a treat.
