Midsomer Quilting Classes 2010/2011
We are really proud of our regular team of excellent teachers who are joined from time to time by teachers from America, Australia and South America. (And Quilters have several times flown from Italy and Spain to attend them).

We run courses almost every Saturday and Sunday, with occasional additional ones midweek.

We are also delighted to host City and Guild classes led by Lynne Quinn, whose web site will reveal the extent and success of her C&G courses.

Our programme will be updated on this site with hard copy programmes issued twice a year to those without email access.

The minimum suggested level of skill for each class is indicated beneath the name of the teacher.

To reserve a place on a class you should contact us as early as possible with a non-returnable deposit of £10-00 per class . In the event of our having to cancel the class the deposit would of course be refunded.

What a great team! I really like teaching here. From the minute you walk into this great quilt shop you are made welcome by De, Chris and Birgitta. From the aroma of brewing coffee to the fantastic ever changing fabrics on the overflowing shelves - and the witty repartee - this is an experience not to be missed. What is there not to like?!

Booking

If you would like to book one of our classes either pop into the shop and do it in person, or if that is not possible, phone us on 01761 2393333 to check on availability and reserve a place and then print out your booking form here and post it with your deposit (or payment in full if you wish) to the address on the bottom of the form.

This is a hugely impressive class. Helen Conway says: I learnt more in the first half an hour than in the past 15 months - the information Dawn gave us on needles and threads and tension issues alone was worth the price. I have pages of notes! I would highly recommend Dawn as a teacher. The class was so informative that after we first staged it we asked Dawn to return the following week to give De and Birgitta a private lesson.

THREADPLAY

This is Catherine's most popular class.  Not only can you learn to make a quilt that is two for the price of one - fully reversible - but you can also learn the magic of quilt-as-you-go. You will never regret learning this labour-saving technique.  If you have blocks to make into a quilt bring them to try out the three different ways of joining them together after quilting.

REVERSIBLE QUILT AS YOU GO

Jenny says: This is a very basic course for people who want to learn machine piecing. I’ll show how to use rulers and rotary cutters to achieve accurate 3.5” squares. Then we’ll look at different needles and threads as well as methods used to achieve a 1/4” seam. You’ll also sew some nine patch blocks with matching seams. Then I’ll show you a quick way to make a small quilt and how you can achieve different designs from a basic block.

She says: Create a little house quilt and receive a degree in Architecture from the Chicago School of Fusing - www.artfabrik.com - at the same time! In this workshop we’ll explore many techniques of fusing: free cutting, layering, collage building, improvisational design and more, resulting in a whimsical neighbourhood placed in a colourful landscape setting and made from beautifully hand-dyed fabrics.

A great way to use up scraps, be they cotton, silk, polyester or lace! Sprinkled over a background, with some threads and sequins, it makes a versatile fabric useful for decorating bags [January 22nd], boxes and book covers. It’s a good technique for trying out different colour combinations and it’s ideal for those who want to give free-machining a go, as the stitches hardly show!  [Fabric Pizza was a sell out class at the Festival of Quilts].

CHRISTMAS CARD HOLDER

A really super class. It runs and runs and this is its fourth or fifth outing. The outcomes are as outstanding as any that we have seen and it’s even been suggested that we stage an exhibition solely of interpretations. Judi first saw the pattern when she was in Paducah and says the best thing about it are all the curved bits with no piecing or curved seams involved.

PADUCAH STAR

Maps tell us where places are; they describe features of Earth. They have great potential for experimentation in fabric. We’ll make textile maps or aerial views of our chosen places, using either pieced or bonded collage techniques.  Bring a map or an aerial photo (Google Maps) or other source to work from, and then turn it into a highly personal quilt. Could be a lovely surprise gift for a relative or friend. This class was a sell-out at the Festival of Quilts.

Carol, who lives in Wyoming, taught here a couple of years ago when her fascination with colour properties was plain to see. She wrote then that The Circle class is tricky to do in a day but can be done. There will be a minimum of sewing; mostly cutting and learning colour strategies. THREADPLAY

This is a centuries-old technique, also known as Chenille. In fact, slashing through fabric layers to reveal the colour below can be traced back to the Renaissance. MACHINE QUILTING FOR BEGINNERS

Create a patchwork style tile pattern like those found on floors and in palaces for centuries. Instead of intricate piecing, we make it easy by placing separate tile shapes onto a background with narrow spacing between each piece. The pieces are fused on and then outlined by hand with blanket-stitch in matching thread to give a soft organic look, just like the real tiles set in stone. Soft colours are not essential - batiks and similar organic fabrics work a treat.
